Accomplishments
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
Won sweeping Nursing Home Reform legislation which will bring staffing levels up to 3.8 hours of care per resident per day;
Awarded the 2008 Community Organizing Award which recognizes excellence in community organizing;
Led state-wide campaign that won passage of legislation that will ensure homemaker services on the weekends & evenings, flexible hours and those homemakers provide personal care such as bathing;
Worked successfully to increase the Community Care Program’s Asset Limit from $10,000 to $17,500;
Organized with SEIU, local 880 to win pay increases for homemakers;
Won $2 million dollars in funding for HOME AGAIN program – this program will assist seniors transition from nursing homes back into the community;
Led state-wide campaign to win passage of the Illinois Federal Housing Preservation Law;
Organized successfully for the preservation and renovation of Britton Budde, Kenmore Apartments and the Pomeroy Apartments, as affordable senior public housing;
Led a successful effort to renew and extend Section 8 contracts in several buildings throughout Chicago, thus assuring continued affordability of the buildings.
In conjunction with United Power for Peace and Justice, JASC won $500 million dollars in the state capital budget for affordable housing;
OVERVIEW OF ONGOING INITIATIVES
JASC is currently working on local organizing efforts in neighborhoods throughout Chicago to preserve and create affordable housing;
JASC continues to organize seniors, families and others to win improvements in the Community Care Program;
JASC is organizing to strengthen and protect social safety net programs, such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaide and HUD programs;
