2019 Post-Law School Fellowship Opportunity with Jane Addams Senior Caucus
Jane Addams Senior Caucus, is a multiracial, grassroots organization led by concerned seniors in the Chicago metropolitan area. We cross neighborhood, racial, religious and socio-economic lines to find common ground upon which to act on our values. Through leadership development, organizing and popular education, we use the power of our collective voice to work for economic, social and racial justice for all seniors and our communities. The Fellowship with Jane Addams Senior Caucus with Supervision from Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights will begin in the summer of 2019.
Jane Addams Senior Caucus has been a leader in the fight for justice for seniors in Chicago for the past 40+ years. Through grassroots organizing we work alongside seniors to fight for change in the fields of affordable housing, healthcare and economic justice and racial justice. We work with directly affected communities, in coalition with ally organizations, law firms and social service agencies. We are committed to advancing social justice for seniors across the city of Chicago by addressing the roots of oppression through systemic change and building a powerful base of seniors, demanding dignity and respect. We work with tenants to build strong tenant associations in their buildings and fight for systemic change by writing policies and passing legislation that addresses the root causes of our members concerns.
Jane Addams Senior Caucus Advocates work on a number of key issues affecting people experiencing poverty and communities of color. These include:
● Protecting housing rights for seniors and persons with disabilities and expanding housing opportunities for low income seniors and communities of color.
● Promoting tenants’ rights across the city of chicago in subsidized senior buildings
● Supporting tenants experiencing retaliation from management both through organizing and legal means
● Advocating for policies that help tenants live safely and with dignity and respect in their homes without fear and danger
● Protecting and strengthening the health care safety net, reducing racial and ethnic health disparities and promoting access to high-quality affordable healthcare for people and families with low-income.
